Dr. P.L. Gautam has assumed charge as Chairman, National Biodiversity Authority, Government of India on 31st December, 2008. The National Biodiversity Authority is functioning at Chennai, Tamil Nadu which is a statutory organization established under Biodiversity Act, 2002. The objectives of the National Biodiversity Authority are to conserve and sustainably use the Biological Resources which are available in our country and to create awareness among people on the importance of Biodiversity and protect our National Biological

wealth and they are valued very important for our people as well as to our future generations.

National Biodiversity Authority has received suggestions from some quarters  for effecting amendments to the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and Biological Diversity Rules, 2004.

All those who are interested in the conservation, sustainable utilization and benefit sharing by the users of the bioresources with stakeholders/conservers of the biological resources may contribute their ideas, suggest amendments to the said Act and Rules. The Act and Rules are available in our website (www.nbaindia.org) which may be helpful for offering suggestions and comments in this respect. Shri Jairam Ramesh, Minister of Environment and Forests, Government of India launched the Celebrations for International Year of Biodiversity on 4th Jan 2010 by releasing calendar of events to raise awareness about the underlying threats to and the need for biodiversity conservation, and the 2010 target is in relation to eleven goals that are highlighted in the attached brochures.

To conserve and record the Jharkhand State's treasure trove of natural resources, the state in association with the Centre, National Biodiversity Authority and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a pilot project titled "Strengthening institutions for the implementation of Biological Diversity Act 2002"

 


14th Authority Meeting held at New Delhi on 21 July 2009
 


       Hon'ble Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh, Minister of Environment and Forests graced the occasion by his presence and guidance to the Authority meeting held at Conference Room, NASC complex, ICAR, New Delhi on 21 July, 2009. The Chairman, NBA made a presentation on National Biodiversity Authority - highlighting the progress, challenges and opportunities in implementation of the provisions of BD Act in the presence of Minister. This was followed by a presentation made by Prof. Madhav Gadgil on IBIS (Indian Biodiversity Information System). The Hon'ble Minister appreciated the initiative of creating IBIS database.
